Dear Pioneer Woman….I am one up on you! I have three basset hounds! 🙂
I don’t share too much personal stuff on my blog mainly because not too much happens. However, I decided to change things up a bit. My three children…whom I call my ‘lil angels are basset hounds. They are my bright light when I have dark and gloomy days. I have had more of those recently because I have been pretty home sick. 🙁 I can cry without judgement when I am with them. They comfort me when I most need it. And, their kisses can change my whole outlook in the blink of an eye. My life would definitely be boring without my Bogart, Jezebelle and Smitty. In case you are wandering, Smitty is the second born baby to Bogart and Jezebelle. They had six puppies on March 4th, 2011, however, we did lose the sixth puppy whom we called Rocky. He was just not as strong as the others and he came much, much later then his brothers and sisters. Watson (aka Fred) the first born now resides in Big Spring, Texas. Smitty with us! Ruby (aka Doris the third born) and Hank the Tank (baby number 5) reside in Snyder, Texas. They get to see each other very often and that makes me happy. Then, Mabel the fourth born lives in Lubbock, Texas with my doctor.
I didn’t say this to many people but it was hard for me to take in Smitty. Don’t get me wrong…he is a cutie! It was just that he reminded me so much of my sweet Sadie Grace (my first basset that left this life too soon). I was so heart broken after her passing and it still bothers me to this day. She got me through so much! He is so much like her in so many ways. His markings are almost exactly like hers as is his physique (long and lean). He was meant to be ours because he needed special care. Somewhere along the way, his muzzle was injured. We are still baffled by this but the only thing we can think of is Jezebelle must of got him somehow. {She wasn’t the best mother….we had to constantly watch her so that she didn’t sit or step on them. It was rough to say the least.}He spent about a week at the vet trying to get a diagnosis and to rule out juvenile cancer. The tests came back negative. Amen! Our vet back home checked with other vets about Smitty and came to the conclusion that he had sustained an injury of some sort and that his bone is healing itself. He just has a bit of a crooked nose and upper jaw. Other than that, he will be perfectly fine.
After my morning workout today, I came home to feed them their breakfast. We break their food up twice a day to help prevent bloat. Bassets are very prone to this. Just FYI. 🙂 I decided that I would try to get shots of them although they didn’t care too much about having their picture taken. Smitty was curious about the camera and came close several times. Check out a few shots from this morning….
Smitty (6 months old)
Jezebelle (6 years old)
Bogart (7 years old)
Oh, they are too cute. I am so glad that they give you comfort. I know that there is nothing quite like the love a dog has for it’s master. They have such a keen sense…somehow they seem to feel what you feel. I am grateful that you have Bogie, Jezebelle, and Smitty.
I have 3 bassets as well! One is named Bogart too, haha. I have a 13 year old- Stanley, Bogart- 5 and Pumpkin is 8 🙂
AWE!!!! I love mine!!! Anytime I see one, I have to go meet him/her and then I break down into my doggie voice. 🙂 I would love to see pictures of yours and how fun is it that you have a Bogart too! Thank you so much for sharing! 🙂 Made my day!
